Mer de Glace – Chamonix, France
The Mer de Glace at sunset — France's largest glacier winding through the peaks above Chamonix as the last light catches the surrounding summits. Seen from above, the glacier looks impossibly large. Seen in comparison to old photographs, it looks impossibly small.

Frequently Asked Questions ▾
Where is Mer de Glace?
The Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice) is the largest glacier in France, stretching approximately 7 kilometres through the Mont Blanc Massif above Chamonix. It is visible from the Montenvers station (1,913m) reached by the historic rack railway from Chamonix, and has been a major attraction for visitors since the Romantic era.
What does this print show?
The print captures the Mer de Glace at sunset from above — France's largest glacier winding through the Mont Blanc Massif peaks in the warm evening light.
How much has the Mer de Glace retreated in recent years?
The Mer de Glace has retreated dramatically over the past century — losing over 2 kilometres in length and more than 150 metres in depth since the Montenvers railway opened in 1909. The glacier currently retreats by around 30–40 metres per year in length, and the depth loss is accelerating. Stairs and then a gondola have been repeatedly extended to maintain access to the glacier's surface as it drops away from the station above — a visible and striking demonstration of glacial change.
What material is this print made from?
This print is made on 200gsm premium matte fine art paper using high-quality giclée printing, ensuring exceptional detail, vibrant tones, and long-lasting quality.
