The Malaya Teak Bed is the most serene design in our solid teak collection. Calm, elegant and beautifully crafted, it brings natural warmth, strength and timeless character into the bedroom.

Unlike mass-produced beds made from MDF, veneer or softwood, the Malaya is crafted from solid teak planks throughout. There are no weak slats, no hollow sections and no shortcuts. The result is a bed designed to feel strong, stable and substantial for many years to come.

Teak is one of the world’s most respected hardwoods, valued for its natural oils, durability and resistance to moisture, insects, warping and rot. This makes it especially suitable for Irish homes, where damp air, winter condensation and central heating can damage lesser woods over time. With proper care, a solid teak furniture piece bought today can remain in the family for generations.

Each Malaya Bed is handcrafted in India by skilled artisans using traditional joinery methods, before being precision engineered for a clean and reliable fit. The timber is kiln treated and fumigated to remove moisture and help protect the wood against future insect activity. It is then hand polished to bring out the rich natural grain and warm tone of the teak.

The teak used for this bed is sustainably sourced from Kerala, India, and harvested through responsible forestry programmes. Areiva is proud to be among the first retailers in Ireland to introduce solid teak bedroom furniture of this standard, exclusively available through Areiva Furniture.

TEAK VS OAK VS MAHOGANY

Teak (Malaya) Oak Mahogany
Natural oils Yes, self-protecting None None
Moisture resistance Excellent Needs sealing Poor
Irish climate Built for it Good with maintenance Warps and fades
Insect and rot resistance Naturally resistant Needs treatment Vulnerable
Scratch resistance High Medium Poor
Ages into Richer patina Holds appearance Faded pinkish brown

Compared with oak and mahogany, teak offers a higher level of natural protection. Its natural oils help the wood resist moisture, insects and rot without relying heavily on sealing or treatment. Oak is strong and durable, but it requires regular maintenance in damp environments. Mahogany can be beautiful, but it is more vulnerable to fading, warping and moisture damage over time.

WHY SOLID TEAK IN AN IRISH BEDROOM?

Irish bedrooms deal with damp coastal air, central heating that runs for much of the year, and winter condensation. Pine can warp. MDF can swell. Veneered beds can bubble and peel within a few years. Solid teak performs differently.

Teak is dense, naturally resilient and highly resistant to moisture, insects and rot. It also develops a richer patina as it ages, making it a long-term investment rather than a short-term furniture purchase. Antique teak furniture from the 1800s is still bought and sold today, which speaks to the lasting value of this remarkable hardwood.

Free nationwide delivery is available across all 32 counties of Ireland. Assembly is not included as standard and is available as an optional extra.
